High blood pressure is a serious issue, which can lead to heart attacks, kidney failure and strokes. If a person has sustained high reading (over 140/90 mm Hg) over a certain period of time, then they are diagnosed with hypertension. Most common causes for this issue appears due to obesity, high salt intake, drinking, stress, lack of aerobic exercise, birth control pills, kidney disease, pain relievers, and adrenal disease. Often those people are subscribed medications, but there are many simple and natural remedies people as well which can help with this condition.
- Cayenne pepper – they help smooth the blood flow and prevent platelets from clumping together and accumulating in the blood. You can add it in a vegetable or fruit salad, or to a bowl of soup. Be cautious, it’s quite spicy.
- Celery – it is rich in phytochemical 3-N-butylphthalide that helps relax the muscles creating more space and allowing the blood to flow without any difficulties. It also reduces the stress hormones that constrict blood vessels. You can try to eat a stalk of celery with a glass of water, or munch it throughout the day.
- Fenugreek seeds – they are rich in potassium and dietary fiber. You can blend the seeds into a paste consuming it 2 times a day in the morning on an empty stomach and once in the evening for a period of 3 months, or you can boil 1-2 tsp of the seeds in water for 2 min and strain.
- Honey – it reduces heart pressure and calms the blood vessels. You can eat 2 tsp every morning on an empty stomach, you can mix 1 tsp with a ginger juice and 2 tsp of cumin seed powder eating it 2 times a day, or mix basil juice and honey in equal ratio consuming it in an empty stomach every day.
- Garlic – boiled and raw controls high blood pressure, reduces cholesterol levels, and relaxes blood vessels by stimulating the production of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide, it also removes gas and reduces heart pressure. Eat 1 or 2 crushed cloves a day, you can drink them with a cup of milk, or mix 5-6 drops of garlic juice in 4 tsps. of water and consume it 2 times a day.
- Watermelon seeds – great for widening blood capillaries due to a compound named cucurbocitrin, excellent for kidney functioning, and great for arthritis as they reduce blood pressure levels. Grind dried watermelon seeds and poppy seeds in equal ratio and take one tsp in the morning on empty stomach and in the evening. Or, add 2 tsp of crushed and dried seeds in a cup of boiled water, let it steep for an hour and strain. Take 4 tbsp. of the water in regular intervals during the day.
- Banana – it is very rich in potassium that lessens the effect of sodium. Try eating 1 or 2 bananas a day and you can mix it with raisins, apricots, currants, orange juice, baked sweet potatoes, winter squash, cantaloupe, and zucchini.
- Lemons – they help the blood vessels be soft and pliable. You can reduce the chance of heart failure by regularly drinking warm water and lemon juice (do not add salt or sugar). It is due to the vitamin C which helps neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals.
- Coconut water – it is rich in potassium, vitamin C and magnesium that decreases systolic blood pressure. Along with the coconut water you can use coconut oil for cooking.
- Onion juice – it contains an antioxidant called quercetin. You can try eating raw, medium-sized onion a day, or mix ½ tsp of onion juice and ½ tsp of honey and take it 2 times a day for a period of 2 weeks.
Any of these foods are great for lowering your blood pressure, so consume them regularly along with your doctor’s medical and dietary advice and regular checkups.
