Treat Phlegm With Home Remedies

Colds and respiratory infections are often accompanied with phlegm which if not treated timely, it can irritate and clog the bronchial tubes causing secondary respiratory infection. It is indicated by a constant cough, runny nose, and constant need for throat clearing, difficulty in breathing, fever, and feeling weak. It is usually expelled through coughing and collects and congests in the chest. There are inflammatory cells, virus, or bacteria in it caused a response to the infection. Moreover, it can be caused by asthma, hay fever, damaged vocal cords, and excessive smoking, besides the common cold, flu, and bronchitis. Dealing with it can be very frustrating, so here are some excellent home remedies that work quickly and do not cause any side effects.

  • Ginger – it is used to fight respiratory and throat tract infections as it has antibacterial, expectorant and antiviral properties. You can add couple of freshly cut ginger circles in a cup of boiled water. Let them steep for a few minutes and after that add 2 tsp. of honey drinking it couple of times a day. You can also chew raw ginger couple of times a day and add it in your dishes.
  • Chicken soup – it helps moisturize the airways thinning the phlegm, as well as soothing the irritated throat and inducing relaxation. Consume a homemade soup 2-3 times a day. You can add ginger and garlic, too.
  • Salt water – mix ¼ tsp of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle the solution, repeating this couple of times a day. The warm water will soothe the irritated throat, while the salt will destroy the bacteria which cause the infection.
  • Carrots – they are loaded in vitamin C and nutrients which reduce cough symptoms; they boost the immune system building resistance to various kinds of infections. You can make a fresh juice from 4-5 carrots, add a bit water to dilute it and then add 2-3 tsp. of honey. Drink it throughout the day.
  • Steam – if you inhale it into the nasal passages the phlegm changes into a liquid form making is easier to eliminate it from your system. You can turn your shower to full heat and then stay in your bathroom with closed door for 10 minutes and after that moisturize your body due to warm water robbing your skin of essential oils and moisture. You can also pour hot boiling water in a bowl, cover your head with a towel and inhale that steam for 5-10 minutes. Repeat this couple of times a day.
  • Onion – it helps relax the throat and remove the phlegm due to its antibiotic, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, it boosts the immune system speeding up the healing process. Chop finely one small onion and wash it, toss it with 2 tsp. of sugar letting it stay for 30 minutes; it will develop a liquid texture; take 1 tsp. of it every 2-3 hours, or when needed.
  • Cayenne pepper – it helps the body release the mucus which is being built up in the nasal passages and the throat reducing the pain at the same time. Mix ¼ tsp. of the pepper with grated fresh ginger, 1 tsp. of honey, 1 tsp. of apple cedar vinegar, and 2 tsp. of water, and drink it 2-3 times a day. You can include the pepper in your dishes.
  • Turmeric – it has antiseptic properties and strengthens the immune system as well. Add 1 tsp. of turmeric powder in a glass of hot milk drinking it in the morning and before going to bed; you can also swallow ½ tsp. of turmeric in a glass of water2-3 times a day; or add 1 tbsp. of turmeric and a pinch of salt in hot water using it to gargle few times a day.
  • Lemon juice – it loosens the mucus and the phlegm as it has antibacterial properties and is full in vitamin C improving the body’s resistance to infections. You can add 2 tsp. of the juice and mix it with 1 tsp. of honey in a glass of water drinking it 3 times a day; or cut a lemon slice and sprinkle salt and pepper on it, then suck on the slice, repeating this 3 times a day.
  • Honey – it is a great remedy for soothing an irritated throat and eliminating phlegm due to its antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and antiviral properties. It boosts the immune system as well. Take 1 tsp. of honey and add a pinch of black or white pepper 2 times a day for 1 week; or add 1 tsp. honey in a glass of warm water consuming it couple of times a day.
