People who eat spicy food, lack exercise, have irregular eating habits, are prone to stress, drink alcohol frequently can have acidity problems. This can cause bad breath nausea, gas and stomach ache. However, there are some simple remedies which can be used to treat this condition neutralizing and flashing out excess acid. You can drink a glass of lukewarm water each day before going to sleep and after you wake up in the mornings. Do not drink water during or after the meal as it leads to improper digestion which contributes to acidity. The following foods/plants can help you as well:
Buttermilk – the lactic acid it contains normalizes the acidity. You can grind half a tsp. or one tsp. of fenugreek seeds with some water to make a paste and mix it in a glass of buttermilk; or drink the buttermilk couple of times a day. For best results you can add black pepper or 1 tsp. of coriander leaf juice.
Cloves – its carminative effects increase hydrochloric acid. Chew 2-3 cloves thoroughly. You can combine crushed cloves and cardamom in equal ratio to minimize the acid and refresh your breath.
Basil leaves – they give instant relief by chewing thoroughly some leaves at the first sign of acid upset; or boil 3-5 leaves in a cup of water, let it simmer for a few minutes, you can add honey, but do not add milk, and sip frequently.
Jaggery – you can buy it in every Indian or Asian ethnic grocery store. Just suck a small piece of it after each meal. It is not suitable for people who have diabetes.
Cumin seeds – it aids in digestion and relieves the paid. You can slightly crush some roasted seeds and stir into a glass of water drinking it after every meal; boil 1 tsp. of the seeds in a cup of water and drink after your meal; or mix 1 tsp. each of coriander seed powder, cumin seed powder, funnel seed powder and some sugar in a half cup of water – drink it on an empty stomach.
Fennel – it has carminative properties. You can chew some aniseed after a heavy or spicy meal; or steep 1-2 tsp of fennel seeds in a cup of hot water, strain and drink couple of times a day.
Apple cedar vinegar – it has alkalizing effect. Mix 1-2 tsp. of raw, unfiltered apple cedar vinegar in a cup of water and drink it 1-2 times a day. You can drink it before meals.
Ginger – it has anti-inflammatory properties which can neutralize the acid. You can chew a fresh slice of ginger, or boil some fresh slices in a cup of water letting it steep for few minutes and drink; a spoonful of ginger juice 2-3 times daily can help too.
Cold milk – it stabilizes gastric acids and provides relief as it is rich in calcium that prevents build-up of the stomach acid. Just drink a glass of cold milk.
Cinnamon – it helps dispel stomach gas and works as a natural antacid. Just add half a tsp. of cinnamon in a cup of water, boil it for couple of minutes. Consume it 2-3 times per day.
